    Description

    The N1 (Employment) segment is optional. If it is appended, it should carry meaningful data (at least an employer name). A wholly blank N1 segment adds record length and segment counts without conveying information and should be omitted instead.

    Common Causes

    • N1 emitted unconditionally even when no employment data exists
    • Employment fields not mapped

    How to Fix

    1. 1Omit the N1 segment when you have no employment data
    2. 2Populate at least the employer name when including N1
    3. 3Update the Trailer segment counts to match
