Challenges for CDFI / Nonprofit Lenders

CBA Reporter cost + membership friction

$2,895–$3,895/yr (capped at 500–2,000 loans, custom pricing above), and you must be a CBA member. Small CDFIs can't afford it; new CDFIs can't bypass the membership requirement.

    Slow onboarding

CBA reports a 3–6 month onboarding; nonprofits with small ops teams can't wait that long to start helping borrowers build credit.

Grant-funded / 0% loans are an FCRA gray zone

Many CDFIs report grant-subsidized or 0% loans where 'credit' isn't textbook; the FCRA reporting posture isn't obvious and CBA training isn't free.

    Verification badges don't carry over

501(c)(3) status and CDFI Fund certification matter for board reports and grant applications — but no Metro 2 vendor surfaces them in your audit trail.

    How Metro2 Helps

    No membership requirement

Self-serve onboarding. Verify your EIN against the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search and your CDFI cert against cdfifund.gov — that's the entire gate.

    Discounted pricing for verified nonprofits

501(c)(3) verification unlocks the nonprofit tier. The cdfi_grant_funded flag unlocks a discounted tier (manual approval in v1).

    Free training module

FCRA basics for nonprofit lenders, credit-builder reporting, IDR / grant-funded special-comment patterns — all included. CBA training-institute equivalent.

    API + CSV

Same API-first product as our Enterprise tier. Smaller CDFIs upload CSVs; larger ones automate via REST. No legacy on-premise software.

Features for CDFI / Nonprofit Lenders

    1IRS 501(c)(3) verification

EIN lookup against the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search API. Verified status is cached on the company record and surfaces as a badge.

    2CDFI Fund certified-list cache

Nightly cron pulls the CDFI Fund's certified list; self-service certification check + badge.

    3Loan-type templates

Pre-seeded mapping templates for credit-builder (Account Type 01), microloan (18), small business (65), and mortgage (26).

    4Grant-funded tier flag

cdfi_grant_funded boolean on companies — unlocks discounted billing tier (v1: manual approval; no billing automation yet).

    Who Uses Metro2

    Credit-builder loan providers

Small-dollar share-secured or unsecured loans purpose-built for credit history.

    Microloan funds

Under-$50k consumer or business microloans with fixed monthly installments.

    Mission-driven small business lenders

501(c)(3) and certified CDFI funds serving underbanked small-business borrowers.

    Affordable-housing nonprofits

Down-payment assistance, second-mortgage, and shared-equity programs requiring K3-segment mortgage reporting.

    Compliance & Regulations

    FCRA §623 furnisher obligations

Same accuracy, dispute response, and reinvestigation duties as any furnisher — pre-flight validation catches CRRG issues before submission.

    Grant-funded loan disclosures

Training module covers the special-comment patterns for 0% / sponsor-subsidized loans and the FCRA posture for grant-funded programs.

    Verified-status audit trail

501(c)(3) verification and CDFI certification lookups write to the existing audit log; cited on customer-facing receipts.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a CBA member to use Metro2?

No. We're complementary to CBA — many customers keep CBA membership for the training and community while using Metro2 for reporting because it's faster to onboard, has transparent pricing, and has no loan caps. Use whichever combination works.

    How does 501(c)(3) verification work?

You enter your EIN; we query the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search API and cache the result (deductibility code, NTEE code, etc.) on your company record. Verified status is required for the nonprofit pricing tier.

How does CDFI Fund certification verification work?

We sync the CDFI Fund's certified list nightly into a local reference table. You enter your EIN; we look it up and surface a verified badge if matched.

    What's the grant-funded tier?

A discounted (or zero-dollar) pricing tier for very-small CDFIs (under ~50 loans/mo) and sponsor-funded programs (Mastercard Inclusive Growth, MetLife Foundation, etc.). v1 is a manual approval; billing automation ships in a later phase.

Which Account Type codes do you recommend?

Credit-builder loans → 01 (Unsecured) or 03 (Share-secured). Microloans → 18 (Installment sales contract). Small business → 65 (Commercial). Mortgages → 26 (First lien). The CDFI profile surfaces recommendations per product; outliers are warnings, not errors.

    Can I report grant-funded or 0% loans?

Yes, with appropriate special comments. Our training module walks through the CRRG patterns for 0% and sponsor-subsidized loans and the FCRA posture for grant-funded programs.

What does the free training module cover?

FCRA basics for nonprofit lenders, credit-builder loan reporting, adverse-action notices, IDR/grant-funded special comments, dispute handling, and obsolescence (7-year rule). Six to eight modules, all linked from /metro2/cdfi-training.

    How fast is onboarding?

Self-serve. Verify EIN → pick loan types → seed mapping template → first file in under an hour for CSV customers. API customers can be live the same day. (CBA reports a 3–6 month onboarding for comparison.)
